Soybean variety development for coastal New South Wales (155)

Natalie Moore

Breeding and evaluation of new soybean varieties for the coastal region of New South Wales (NSW) is a high priority of the Australian Soybean Breeding Program (ASBP). The program is a collaboration between CSIRO, NSW DPI and GRDC.  In addition to adaptation to a diverse range of farming systems in this region, new soybean varieties must also possess traits that confer greater reliability of crop production in coastal environments and meet the requirements of culinary processors. The ASBP has recently announced ‘Richmond’ and ‘Hayman’, two new and very different varieties for this region. In this paper multi-season data will be presented to illustrate the improved traits of these varieties and their fit into coastal farming systems will be discussed.
