In this presentation he suggests that the Darling Downs most profitable and sustainable irrigation rotation system is one where modern Bollgard cotton is planted directly into standing sorghum stubble. The benefits are seen in improved water use efficiency, lower farm labour and energy inputs, ability to apply deeper nutrients and a greater protection against insect, disease and weed resistance potential. These benefits will also fit into many dryland farming systems. Cotton and sorghum should therefore not be seen as competitive crops, but rather be seen to complement one another and allow a greater ability to maximise the farming profits over a longer period of time.
