Thomas Gulya

Tom grew up in New Jersey and has always been interested in plants. He obtained a BS degree in Agriculture from the University of Delaware, and then moved to the Midwest where he obtained his MS and PhD in Plant Pathology at Iowa State University. He joined the USDA’s Sunflower Research Unit, in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1978, and has worked as the unit’s sole pathologist for 35 years. His research encompasses all diseases of sunflower, from seedling blights to stem rot to head rots. During his career he has hosted scientists and students from around the world, and has had the opportunity to visit sunflower researchers on every continent.
